Early Life and Dream of Service
Dylan Merola was born on April 23, 2001, and grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, California. From a young age, Dylan knew he wanted to be a Marine. His commitment to this dream led him to enlist right after graduating from high school. Shortly thereafter, he began his journey at MCRD San Diego for basic training. Upon completion, Dylan was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, California
Service and Sacrifice in Kabul
In August 2021, Dylan was deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, where he served at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport. His mission was to protect and assist those seeking to flee the country during the U.S. withdrawal. On August 26, while helping a child to safety, Dylan’s life was tragically cut short by a bomb explosion. He had been in Kabul for less than two weeks and had plans to attend college to study engineering.
